Rugby league: ex All Black’s nephew Josh Schuster likely to reject New Zealand interest

But a humiliated Schuster says his heart is in New South Wales and the Kangaroos.

“It was a big shock to me,” says Schuster Sydney Morning Herald. “I think it’s more to honor my grandfather and his brother who played for the All Blacks … being named to the team is quite surreal.

“I will not lie, one day I would like to play Origin footy and for my country, Australia. It is good that my options are open.”

Driven by his preference, Schuster says, “I would definitely say NSW and Australia.

“I’ve wanted to play Origin since I was a kid and played Origin at 16 and 18. Being part of an Origin team is very flattering.

“It all went so fast this year, I didn’t have time to think about it. I love it.”

Schuster has already been coached by Blues boss Brad Fitler at the age group, while former New South Wales Origin star Michael Ennis is his mentor.

NSWRL Chief Executive David Trodden says Schuster has been a key part of their future path program for the past five years and admits he’s surprised at his call-up to New Zealand.

“He has played for a number of NSW underage teams and is highly regarded by our high performing staff,” he says.

“He’s definitely an Origin player of the future. We wouldn’t mind seeing him lost to our system.”
