Destination reached I’m pleased to say. A week after our departure from Jersey we have finally reached the Isle of Skye. Not a ferry crossing, instead the road from Kyle of Lochalsh over the Skye bridge.
Originally the plan was to go by ferry from Mallaig but all ferries were booked when we went online. Just as well we had our train journey there yesterday. We felt a little smug this morning when we passed the road to Mallaig. A rather large sign announced disruptions on the ferry to Skye. I dare say it was a little rough.
It was a three hour journey along decent A roads with views in all directions. Still plenty of bluebells to be seen but the lush green started to disappear with a more rugged mountainous scenery and plenty of gorse and pine trees. Rain sloshed down at regular intervals although not enough to spoil the view. At one point we crossed the Caledonian canal. For most of the journey we followed the A87 as it travelled by lochs and glenns . Passing the site of the 1719 battle at Glen Shiel and then onto the picturesque castle at Eileen Donan. The bridge to Skye soon came into view ( the photo above ) and we were over in a matter of seconds. Much more preferable to a sea crossing. We are staying at Portree the islands capital. From our window a distant view of the sea.
Hopefully tomorrow lots of walking. We’ve been on the move for ages now and I feel it’s time for a little down time soaking up the local scenery. Hope all ok in your corner.
