The other day I filmed something that broke my heart. I met a beautiful, but sick little girl, who was bedridden and coughing up a distressing amount of brown phlegm. The following day I returned to take pictures to post on my blog. This is a story I felt needed to be shared.

Sarah Kanaan
Nine-year-old Sarah Kanaan has Cystic Fibrosis and because her family is forced to live in Nahr el Bared (a Palestinian Refugee Camp in Tripoli, Lebanon), they are denied state funded health care, the ability to travel abroad for treatment, and limited work opportunities to pay for medicine that costs $2,000 USD a month.

Sarah and her Father
Because her family cannot afford to pay for this medicine, Sarah is forced to visit the
Bienfaisance Islamic Hospital in Tripoli once or twice a month for treatment (treatment paid for by an UNRWA – United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees).
If Sarah was Lebanese her medication would be paid for and she would be able to live a relatively normal life. Not having this medication will not only deny Sarah a normal life, it will also shorten her life due to the strain put on her internal organs by her condition.

Sarah and her Mother
None of the political factions in Nahr el Bared will help Sarah because her father refuses to become politicized.
Instead, he works long hours as a Manager of a construction company.
The only outside contribution the Kanaan family receives is $70 USD provided by the Al Quds mosque in Nahr el Bared.

You’ll be relieved to know that not everyone in Nahr el Bared is suffering.
We filmed a Mullah at another Nahr el Bared mosque driving a brand new Range Rover HSE. His older Range Rover has flat tires and is collecting dust in the mosque's parking lot.
