I have an old rocking chair which belonged to my grandmother. She was from Alabama and was married to a preacher. She had many trials in her life. She was a dear lady. I have decided to bring that rocking chair into my living room as a reminder of my grandmother. I will sit and rock, when times get rough, and sing her favorite hymn, "Tempted and Tried. . We'll understand it all by and by."
When a trial happens, the best thing to do is just start working. Just start cleaning or fixing supper. Say prayers and let the tears fall, but get some housework done. This will help bring peace.
We can think of the generations before us, and the hard work they accomplished at home each day. Our grandmothers read their Bibles and went to church and prayed. They had great wisdom. Yet our culture is changing and we often feel like pioneers in a new world and don't know how to handle anything. Remembering the history of our families and the old days will help us keep our bearings.
This afternoon, I am going to bring out the old rocking chair and I am going to sit quietly and pray and sing some of the old hymns and remember my heritage.
