As you are possibly aware, Russ is back on the FOG Express and is looking to buy some 6mm Carthaginians from Baccus.
I'm tempted to call Pete at Baccus once he's done so and get the inside scoop on the troops Russ bought! It'll be elephants but I'll let him pretend its a surprise.
So now I need to plan a Republican Roman army to respond. From my hazy memory a 600 point army consists of 16 bases of hastati and principes, 8 of velites, 4 of triarii, 8 of cavalry and 8 of Italian allies.
As Russ has worked up an army list of 652 points I'll do the same for my Romans
Using the handy FOG army list generator, this gives me...
10 bases of velites
16 of hastati / principes
8 of triarii (to take on the elephants or flanking horse)
10 bases of Roman cavalry
8 bases of Gallic mercenary cavalry.
Of course, I can also switch the Gallic for more triarii / velites should Russ prove to be more elephant centric.
Now to look at the prices...
Baccus
Prices - £6 per 96 infantry, £3 per 48 infantry, £6 per 45 cavalry
I think I can get 6 heavy foot (triarii etc.) on a base. 4 medium foot and 4 velites to a base and 4 cavalry to the base.
16 bases of hastati = 96 figures (so £6)
8 bases of triarii = 48 figures (£3)
12 bases of velites = 48 figures (£3)
8 bases of Italian allies = 32 figures (£6 as I have to buy a full pack)
10 bases of cavalry = 40 figures (£6)
8 bases of Gallic cavalry = 32 figures (£6)
All in (before VAT and shipping) this comes to £30. But after VAT and postage this is about £40.
Rapier
16 bases of hastati = 96 figures (so £5)
8 bases of triarii = 48 figures (£2.50)
12 bases of velites = 48 figures (£2.50)
8 bases of Italian allies = 32 figures (£2.50 as I have to buy 2 packs of Greeks to substitute)
10 bases of cavalry = 40 figures (£5)
8 bases of Gallic cavalry = 32 figures (£5)
All in (before shipping) this comes to £22.50. Rapier don't stick VAT on the end (its included in the price) so this will come in closer to £25 - a whopping £15 difference!
Bearing in mind that I already have a bunch of Republican Romans and Greeks from Rapier then I'm tempted to just 'fill in the gaps' (indeed I also bought some Celts so may have enough Gallic horses already). So tonight I need to look into the lead box, see what I've got and fill in the gaps from Rapier. Mainly Command packs for my Generals I think.
UPDATE! Fark! I forgot the Commanders (see what happens when you don't play a rule set for a while!). A Field and 2 Troop Commanders costs 120 points - so I can safely reduce the numbers of troops required.
